Death has been announced of Former Pope Benedict XVI who was critically ill.

He died at his Vatican residence at the age of 95.

Benedict whose birth name was Joseph Ratzinger was the first German-born pope in 500 years.

Previously, his successor Pope Francis warned that Benedict was “very ill.”

Benedict stepped down from the role in 2013.
