The Commission of Inquiry investigating the circumstances that led to the arrest of Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Martha Chizuma has dismissed reports that the she was manhandled by police officers as earlier reported.
After her arrest, media reports showed that there were reports of ill treatment against Chizuma during the time of her arrest and that some police officers tried to physically assault her adding that she was forced to kneel down before a police officer.
While accusing the police of using excessive force in the arrest of Chizuma on December 6, 2022, the findings of the Commission of Inquiry showed that some of the things that were said in Parliament were exaggerated.
The statement also revealed that the police arrested Chizuma based on assumptions as the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Steve Kayuni did not single out the name of Chizuma when lodging his complaint as his statement only referred to an ACB official.
The statement continued that before instituting Chizuma’s arrest, no investigations were done.
After arresting her, the report said the police did not tell where they were taking her and no arrangements for female detectives was made despite knowing fully that the suspect was female.
The Commission also faulted the police for not adhering to president’s directive to release Chizuma unconditionally as the police went on to cation her and release her on bail.
