Wakawaka Market in Lilongwe which was to be closed by the Lilongwe City Council yesterday due to poor sanitation, is still operating.
In the wake of Cholera outbreak, the City’s Mayor Richard Banda temporarily closed saying poor sanitation at the market is putting people’s lives at risk.
The order of the closure of the market was effective today, January 4, 2023.
Speaking on why people are still plying their businesses at the market after the order, the Market’s chairperson Kuchombo said they were not notified about the inspection.
According to Kuchombo, people plying their businesses at the market have a lot of goods which they have nowhere to take them if the market is closed altogether.
Kuchombo added that people should sell their goods first before closing the market.
Currently, market leaders and the city council officials are discussing the matter.
