Communities in Luchenza Municipality have raised concerns on hygiene safety as they have spent three weeks without running tap water.

According to Luchenza Municipality Mayor Size Simeji, despite the fact that they haven’t registered any case of cholera, the situation puts them at risk of the outbreak.

He continued that attempts to drill boreholes are being blocked by the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) as it remains sole water provider in the municipality.

SRWB Chief Executive Officer Duncan Chimbamba in written response to our questionnaire on Wednesday attributed the challenge to illegal draw offs on their pipeline from Likhubula and these make water to reach Luchenza at low pressure.

He also said the problem has been exacerbated by low voltage at one of their two boreholes and only one borehole is currently in operation, but they will address the challenge soon.
