473 flood-affected households in Karonga were uplifted on Thursday following a donation by the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs (DoDMA).
Each recipient got a 50-kilogram bag of maize, 10 meters of plastic sheet amongst other items.
Speaking in an interview at the sidelines of the donation, District Relief and Rehabilitation Desk Officer for Karonga, Shepherd Jere cautioned communities residing along river banks to relocate to higher grounds.
“It is worrisome that, annually, communities that reside near river banks keep on getting affected by floods despite calls to relocate. We are engaging community leaders to help us by considering allocating land to the victims,” Jere said.
In his remarks, one of the recipients, Williamson Mwamulima ,who hails from Mweniyumba Village in the district expressed gratitude to DoDMA, saying the plastic sheets will go a long way in renovating their damaged houses.
