Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody a 39 year old man Fradrick Nyamula, one of the criminals who stole K6.5 million from a person appearing in CCTV footage at Gateway Mall in the city.
Lilongwe Police Spokesperson Hastings Chigalu said out of K6.5 million, K2, 174, 000 has been recovered.
On January 4, 2023, a person withdrew K6.5 million from a bank and Nyamula together with his suspected accomplice, Khonya Makina followed the person up until they reached at a city mall where Nyamula was dropped off to accomplish the mission while Makina drove close to Mbowe Filling Station to wait for his colleague.
“After successfully stealing the bag containing the cash, the suspects went to Mchesi where a certain amount was left to Fradrick’s cousin, before they proceeded to Blantyre.
“Fradrick instructed his cousin to distribute the money to different individuals and mobile money accounts and then throw the red bag in a toilet,” Chigalu says.
According to Chigalu, after intensive investigations and follow-ups, the station detectives managed to trace and recover part of the stolen money, but efforts are still underway to arrest Khonya Makina.
