A heart-wrenching accident occurred on the Kasungu-Nkhotakota M18 road, when a motor vehicle hit and killed 4-year-old Ivy Mark as she was crossing the road at Chima Trading Center.

According to Kasungu police spokesperson, Joseph Kachikho, the driver of the vehicle, Diyele Gaya, was operating a MN Hino 660 lorry and was traveling from Kasungu towards Malomo at the time of the incident.

Kachikho explained that Ivy was crossing the road from right to left, following her friends on the other side, when the vehicle hit her.

The impact caused the vehicle to swerve and over-overturn, coming to a rest in the bush.

Ivy sustained severe head injuries and a fracture on her left arm, and despite receiving treatment at Kasungu District Hospital, she tragically passed away.

The driver and two passengers in the vehicle sustained minor injuries and have been arrested for causing death by reckless driving.

They will appear in court soon. The police have also issued a call to all road users to adhere to traffic rules and regulations in order to prevent similar tragic incidents from occurring.
