A Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) student has been found dead on Sunday, in a room where he had lodged at Mphate trading centre in Ntcheu district.

The deceased has been identified as Gift Phiri, 22, who was an Energy Engineering student, from Mkhokaminyala Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chilowamatambe in Kasungu district.

Ntcheu Police Public Relations Officer Rabecca Ndiwate said the lodge staff members reported the incident to the police station, saying Phiri was not responding during check-out time after several attempts.

Ndiwate said police officers rushed to the scene and took Phiri to Ntcheu district hospital where post mortem results revealed that death was due to organophosphate poisoning.

Organophosphate poisoning occurs when one is exposed to organophosphates, which are substances used as medications or insecticides, among other things.

The police said they are still investing the cause of the poisoning.

This comes barely two weeks after another man was found dead in a room within Ntcheu Boma
