A 40-year-old man from Nkhata-Bay district has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labor for injuring his own 4-month-old baby.
On November 14, 2022, Lyman Salima Kamanga threw his child to the ground for unknown reasons.
The baby was taken to Mzuzu hospital, where it was discovered that both of the child’s legs were broken.
State prosecutor, Senior Superintendent Moja Phiri, argued for a harsher punishment for Kamanga in light of the young age of the victim, and stated that Kamanga had purposely committed the crime instead of fulfilling his responsibilities as a caretaker.
Kamanga pleaded for leniency, stating that his family relied on him, but the First Grade Magistrate, Ezekiel Kamtikana, did not consider these factors and handed down the sentence.
