The Malawi government, World Bank and other development partners have signed an agreement on the launching of Malawi Social Protection Multi Donor trust Fund with an aim of harmonizing social protection financing in Malawi.
Minister of Finance for Malawi, Sosten Gwengwe and World Bank country representative for Malawi Hugh Riddell signed the agreement today on behalf of their parties in Lilongwe.
The Multi-donor Trust Fund will allow the Government of Malawi to provide unconditional cash transfers to vulnerable Malawians and provide cash for work to households at risk of life-threatening hunger.
U.S government through USAID and Iceland government have so far contributed a combined amount of $6.4 million into the fund.
US Ambassador to Malawi David Young said by investing in local communities to undertake public works that improve soils and watersheds, the program will also help improve harvests and increase Malawi’s flexibility to the effects of climate change.
