As the deadline for President Lazarus Chakwera’s New Year promise to announce a new cabinet nears, Malawians await its fulfilment with eagerness.

Chakwera, elected in June 2022, has faced criticism for self-imposed deadlines on various issues, some of which have not been met.

In contrast, previous presidents were known to make sudden cabinet reshuffles, which reduced pressure on them.

Political commentator Victor Chipofya warns that unfulfilled promises may harm Chakwera’s popularity leading up to the 2025 elections.

Political science lecturer Joseph Chunga advises Chakwera to follow through on his deadlines.
