Two people have died after a vehicle they were travelling in, a Toyota Hilux registration number SA 9186 was washed away by running water along Enukweni River in Mzimba.
The vehicle is said to have first stuck in the mud in the middle of the river ‘which was passable’, moments before a storm started Saturday afternoon.
Mzuzu police spokesperson Paul Tembo confirmed of the accident in an interview with the press.
According to Tembo,Penjani Kanyimbo driver and his colleague Godfrey Phiri both employees of a local NGO Soils Food and Healthy Communities SFHC, wanted to take the vehicle to the other side of the river for safety as a heavy storm was about to start which usually floods the river.
But as they attempted to cross the river at Kawanda the vehicle stuck in the mud, and moments later heavy running water swept the vehicle away with the two still on board.
A search conducted by villagers managed to recover the body of the driver Kanyimbo 51 on Sartuday evening while Phiri’s body was discovered Sunday morning.
