Malawi has recorded 26 deaths of elderly people being killed in a space of 2 years over witchcraft allegations.

This comes as many elderly people in the country continue being subjected to various forms of atrocities for being accused practicing witchcraft.

Minister of Gender, Disability, Children and Social Welfare Jean Sendeza says the ministry strongly condemns booming cases of inhuman acts against elderly in the country.

According to Sendeza, it is disheartening that with a population of about 1.3 million elderly people in the country, community members continue to infringe elderly people with different kinds of violence.

However, government has revealed plans to move parliament to have the National Order Persons bill which will help to give stiffer punishments to perpetrators found abusing elderly.
