Member of Parliament (MP) for Lilongwe South East, Steve Baba Malondera, has asked the House’s leadership to invite a mental specialist to examine some of his fellow lawmakers.
Malondera said the behaviour of some MPs calls for an examination to gauge if they are mentally fine.
His sentiments came hot on the heels of a debate on the federal system of government, which had been initiated by MP for Mzimba North Yeremiah Chihana.
But Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara ruled Malondera out of order, describing his views as a “reflection on a member”, something that is not permitted in the House.
Mulanje Bale MP Victor Musowa has also called for the withdrawal of Malondera’s sentiments and that they should be scraped off the Hansard.
“Our constituents did not vote for mad people,” Musowa said.
Meanwhile, Hara has asked court clerk to review what Malondera said before the statement is scrapped off.
