Tragedy struck Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU) on Saturday night when a third-year medical student, Oscar Masaiti, was brutally attacked and stabbed to death by a group of six criminals.

The incident occurred as Masaiti and his cousin, Mwila Mwila, were walking towards the University of Zambia gate from East Park Mall after a night of drinking.

According to Zambia Police Deputy Spokesperson, Danny Mwale, Masaiti and Mwila were ambushed by the group of criminals who proceeded to stab them multiple times.

Mwila managed to escape and reported the attack to Handsworth Police Post. Unfortunately, Masaiti sustained fatal injuries and succumbed to his wounds.

The University of Zambia has released a statement condemning the attack and expressing its condolences to Masaiti’s family and friends.

The statement read, “The University of Zambia community is saddened by the death of Mr. Oscar Masaiti, a third-year medical student at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.”

The surviving victim, Mwila Mwila, is currently receiving treatment at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident and are urging anyone with information that could assist in apprehending the culprits to come forward.
