There was commotion in Karonga District on Monday as people scrambled to buy maize from Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) depot, commonly known as Chitipa Stage Admarc.

The commotion erupted after the people felt the officials at the depot were delaying to start selling the commodity when the people had lined up way before sunrise.

However, some people allegedly slept at the depot to ensure she bought the grain early, people started pushing each other and wanted to force themselves into the depot by breaking the gate after getting tired of being on lines without progress.

Spokesperson for Kalonga Police, George Mulewa, said when they called to the scene, the situation calmed and they started purchasing maize around 1pm.

Meanwhile, ADMARC has officially opened its markets and each and every individual is allowed to buy only 25kgs at K300 per kg.
