In Machinga, Sienta taxi-drivers have taken a stand against government fines for contravening road traffic offenses.
The drivers, led by Chikondi Gunde, have delivered a petition to the Machinga district council demanding that the fines be reversed.
Gunde argues that the recent hike from K5000 to K10000 is too punitive in the current economic climate, and has given authorities until Monday next week to respond.
The drivers’ concerns have been heard by the Secretary in the office of the District’s Commissioner, Biston Mawindo, who received the petition on behalf of the authorities.
Mawindo has promised to forward the petition to relevant authorities for further consideration.
