The United Democratic Front (UDF) is yet to decide on a date for its elective convention, according to spokesperson Yusuf Mwawa. This contradicts party president Lilian Patel’s earlier announcement that new leaders would be elected in August of this year.
Mwawa said party officials will soon meet to discuss the matter, guided by the party’s constitution which allows the convention to be held anytime before six months to the elections.
He emphasized that the party is focused on achieving the 50+1 votes needed to win the 2025 elections, citing previous successes under the leadership of Bakili Muluzi and Bingu wa Mutharika.
However, political commentator Wonderful Mkhutche criticized the UDF’s lack of leadership and direction, stating that it makes the party an unlikely contender in the upcoming elections.
He argued that the UDF’s failure to hold its convention as planned shows a lack of readiness and organization, making it difficult for Malawians to take the party seriously.
