The National AIDS Commission (NAC) has confirmed that over eight thousand people are dying of AIDS every year in Malawi.
The sentiment has been revealed during the mid-year review of the National Strategic Plan for HIV and AIDS (2020-2025) by NAC.
There is an estimation that about 15,000 new HIV infections, down from about 17,600 at the end of 2022.
The report by NAC has also indicated that about 2.3 million Adolescent Girls and Young Women ages ranging between 15-24 out of which 49 thousand are living with HIV in the country.
According to the Country’s Director for UNAIDS Nuha Ceesay, with the political will standing in the country hopes are sky-high that the country will contain HIV and AIDS by 2030.
And on his part, Bulaal Wilson program officer for Department of HIV/AIDs care and treatment said they are putting in place measures that are aligned to make the disease no longer health threat.
Meanwhile, Malawi is targeting to reduce the new infections of HIV to 11,000 by 2025.
