Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) says there will be heavy rainfall associated with thunderstorms in lakeshore districts of Nkhotakota, Karonga, Nkhatabay, Salima and other parts of northern areas this week.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency on Monday, Director for DCCMS Lucy Mtilatira said this is due to high influence of a series of pressure systems over the south east coast of South Africa which is strengthening the rainy belt over the north.

“Therefore, this rainfall may cause some flash flooding in lakeshore areas and some patches of fog localised with rains in southern region and strong Mwera wind will also blow in Lake Malawi and other water bodies this week”, she said.

Mtilatira said it is important for people who use the lake to take necessary precaution measures to avoid loss of properties and lives.

Meanwhile, the statement DCCMS released on Monday said Mwera winds have started blowing over Lake Malawi and other water body areas and is moving over 40 Kilometres per hour from south east coast of South Africa.

“In this time, it is important to avoid crossing flooded waters and streams to avoid disaster like drowning. Also take note to strengthen building and structures. Unblocking waterways and drainage is paramount in this season”, said the statement.
