Police in Nkhotakota have made a breakthrough in their investigations into suspected forgery offences, with the arrest of two men and the seizure of electronic gadgets believed to have been used to print fake National Identity Cards.
According to the Nkhotakota Police Station Spokesperson, Paul Malimwe, the suspects have been identified as Selemani Chirwa, aged 37 of Mpondambiri Village, and another 37-year-old man, Blessings Banda, both from the area of Senior Chief Kanyenda in the district.
Malimwe revealed that the first suspect, Chirwa, had gone to the Nkhotakota National Registration Bureau office on Monday with a forged national ID card for renewal. However, officials at the bureau became suspicious and reported the matter to the police, leading to Chirwa’s arrest.
During the subsequent investigation, Chirwa reportedly confessed to having obtained the fake ID from Blessings Banda, who resides in Dwangwa. Police then raided Banda’s residence and recovered four more fake identity cards, along with a Canon printer and a Dell computer, which are believed to have been used in the production of the forged documents.
The suspects are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of their activities.
