Former Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president, Sameer Suleman, has proposed that the Malawi National Football Team, The Flames, take a two-year break from international football to rebuild and save Malawians from embarrassment and hypertension. Suleman, who is now Blantyre City South East lawmaker, made the suggestion during question time to the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Parliament on Monday.
Suleman argued that the two-year break would provide ample time for Malawi to develop a strong team that could effectively compete on the international stage. He believes that rebuilding the team is necessary to avoid the current embarrassment and hypertension that Malawians experience when The Flames fail to perform.
During the question time, Chitipa South lawmaker Werani Chilenga asked Sports Minister Uchizi Mkandawire why the government is allowing schools to operate without sports facilities, including football grounds. Chilenga argued that sports are an essential aspect of education, and the lack of sports facilities in schools is detrimental to children’s development.
Sports Minister Uchizi Mkandawire promised to look into the matter and ensure that all schools have sports facilities. He also expressed his gratitude for Suleman’s proposal and said that he would consult with the relevant authorities on the matter.
The proposal to take a break from international football has sparked mixed reactions from football fans and analysts in Malawi. Some believe that the break would be beneficial for the team, while others argue that it would hinder the team’s progress and development.
