Legislators Welani Chilenga, Raymond Nkhata and Julius Chione Mwase have said they will not be threatened by some sections of the party because of their choice of Kondwani Nankhumwa as Presidential candidate.

Chilenga of Chitipa South, urged leaders within the party to be democratic and let followers elect a person of their choice.

“We cannot be calling ourselves democrats when we gag people. As for me, they have never threatened me. I want them to stop threatening other members.

“Beginning today, our candidate is Nankhumwa, and we will campaign to the end. He is our choice, and let them have their choice. No threats!” he charges.

On his part, Mwase said they will make sure that the convention is held by July.

“Come what may, the convention will be held in July and we will elect out leaders,” he said.

Nkhata also dispelled what he termed propaganda within the DPP that Nankhumwa is working for the Tonse government.
“Nankhumwa is leader of opposition, and where there is need to support government, he does, and where he needs to speak against them, he does as well.

“Some people have simply run out of ideas and do not know what to say anymore. Ours is Nankhumwa,” he said.
Effort to talk to DPP spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba proved futile.
