The Media Institute of Southern Africa-MISA Malawi has called on government to review the Electronic Transactions and Cyber security Act of 2016 in addressing challenges restricting online freedom.

The Act among others, makes provision for criminalizing offenses related to computer systems and information communication technologies.

Teresa Ndanga MISA Malawi Chairperson was speaking at Kamuzu Palace when President Lazarus Chakwera hosted the media at a world Press Freedom Day breakfast under the theme “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human right”

Ndanga said the amendments are significant towards protection and realization of fundamental rights provided for in the constitution.

Meanwhile president Lazarus Chakwera has committed to promote the freedom of expression as well as free media in the country.

However, Moses Kumkuyu minister of information and digitization has said government has taken note of the request and disclosed that there are policy and legislative issues that need to be taken into consideration before changing the Act.
