The Senior Resident Magistrate court in Mzuzu has convicted and sentenced a 39-year-old Chancy Nkosi to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour for Acts Intended to Cause Grievous Harm contrary to section 235(a) of the Penal Code.

The court through police prosecutor Sub Inspector Chikondi Lipato, heard that the convict on February 25, 2023, with intent to maim, disfigure or disable, unlawfully wounded William Mkolongo by stabbing him on the neck with a knife. This happened at Chiputula area in the City of Mzuzu.

Some well wishers tipped the police who rushed to the scene and took the victim to the hospital, and later on arrested Nkosi.

Appearing before court, Nkosi pleaded not guilty to the charge which prompted the state to parade three witnesses to prove the case.

In his submission, prosecutor Lipato prayed for a stiffer punishment, saying the convict’s character was inhumane and that the victim could have lost his life if it wasn’t for the quick response from police.

Passing sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Issah Maulidi accorded with the state’s submission thereby sentenced Nkosi to 14 years jail term as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

Nkosi comes from Mompho Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba District.
