In an ambitious drive to boost electricity accessiblity to large populace, Malawi government has disclosed that it will soon start tapping electricity from caborabasa dam in Mozambique.

Speaking in Blantyre during the public engagement on fuel and electricity organised by Malawi energy regulatory authority (MERA), Matola told the stakeholders that all is set to start tapping electricity from caborabasa dam by this December this year.

Matola further said the Malawi government is also negotiating with other neighbouring countries such as Zambia and Tanzania for the same power interconnection deal.

“Yes, I can confirm that we have now finalised our negotiations with authorities from Mozambique so that we embark on this project by December this year.

“We will start tapping 120 meggawats of electricity from the dam . We will also tap 180 megawatts from songwe river basin in Tanzania and other one from Zambia,” Matola said.

Apart from this, Matola said Malawi government has devised several measures to ensure that electricity is largely accessible by the large populace.

Matola, who was flanked by the minister of information and digitalization, Moses Kunkuyu, further assured the nation of an end to power challenges, owing to various strategies outlined as well as the 100 percent power generation resumption at Kapichira Hydro power station.

“We are also cultivating our plans to embark on power trading drive with other countries on e we have more than enough volumes of electricity in the country as one way of economic development,” he said.

According to the energy minister, the country has now 366.7 megawatts, but, requires over 5.82 megawatts for it’s citizenry.

Matola, However, expressed disappointment with continued cases of vandalism of public infrastructure such as electricity poles, cables, transformers, describing such behaviour as detrimental.

For decades, Malawi government has been promising it’s populace of power interconnection deal from Mozambique in a bid to increase the access to electricity.
