Information reaching this publication indicates that Students at Walemela Secondary School in Nkhotakota caused damage to school property during a protest last night.

The students were reportedly protesting against a change in their diet, which was prompted by a shortage of resources.

In the chaos that ensued, window glasses of an administration block were shattered, and items such as books, a computer set, and speakers were allegedly stolen.

Esther Mkwanda, the Central East Region Police Spokesperson, explained that a meeting had taken place between the school management and students, during which it was agreed to alter the diet.

However, to the surprise of the management, the protest turned violent, resulting in property damage. While peace has now been restored, some of the students involved in the incident have fled, and no arrests have been made as of yet.

Mphatso Nkuonera, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, confirmed that the ministry has been informed about the incident.

A team of officials has been dispatched to the school to assess the situation and gather more information.
