The China Railway 20 (CR20) company, which is constructing the Bangula-Marka railway line, has donated assorted scholastic materials to two primary schools in Nsanje.

The donation, which is worth K4 million, was made on behalf of the company by the Chairperson of Nsanje District Council  Rose Makiyi.

The two schools that received the donation are Bangula and Nsanje Catholic Primaries.

According to the headteacher for Bangula Patrick Bishop, his school has been hosting learners from Bangula Evacuation Camp who joined their parents and guardians who fled floods from Makhanga Island early this year.

He said the institution in question already has the largest number of learners, and the arrival of these learners means the statistics have increased dramatically.

“We have an enrollment of 4,031 comprising 1,980 girls and 2,051 boys against 49 teachers,” he said.

Bishop also said that with the limited resources the school has, it can not meet the coming influx of learners.

“The donation has come at a time when there are no materials to meet the number of learners at the school and those from the Excavation Centre,” he alleged.

The Chairperson of Nsanje District Council, Rose Makiyi, received the donation on behalf of the two institutions. She has since hailed the contractor for the timely social responsibility it is rendering to the district.

“Some months ago, the CR20 company also donated assorted food items to the affected people in camps at Nsanje Boma,” she said.

The donated materials included notebooks, balls, mathematics instrument boxes, and school bags, just to mention a few.

The donation is part of CR20’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

The company has a long history of supporting education in Malawi and other countries where it operates.
