Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Director of Operations Joe Nyirongo, who is facing robbery charges, is expected to remain in the cooler in the next 14 days as his request for bail has been declined.

The case came before Principal Resident Magistrate Clemence Chamwenda in Mzuzu on Friday.

According to Mzuzu Police spokesperson, Paul Tembo, the State through Assistant Superintendent Vickness Simwinga prayed that the accused be remanded as investigations are still underway and that the victim is still battling for his life at Mzuzu Central Hospital.

Nyirongo, popularly known as Big Joe, is suspected to have been with four accomplices who are still at large.

It is alleged that the robbery in question involved theft of money amounting to K6 million from a businessman.

The business person had hired a taxi after conducting his routine business in the central business district of Mzuzu, only to be attacked along the way.
