Police in Balaka have arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion that he killed his girlfriend.
Balaka Police Public Relations Officer Gladson M’bumpha has identified the suspect as Peter Mkutumula, who is also a tailor, and the deceased as Ruth Matewuzo, aged 31.
According to M’bumpha, it is reported that on the particular night of 18 June 2023, the suspect was seen quarreling with the deceased just before she was discovered dumped and in agony over various injuries, an hour later.
The matter was reported to police who took the victim to Balaka District Hospital where she died while receiving treatment.
Postmortem results from Balaka district hospital established that death was caused due to head injuries, secondary to strangulation and the body was also found with multiple bruises on the face, head and body.
Peter Mkutumula, who is from Mkutumula Village in the area of Traditional Authority Makwangwala in Ntcheu District, will appear before court soon to answer a charge of murder as investigations are underway to establish the motive behind the killing.
The deceased was from Mzati Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District.
