Leader of Opposition in Parliament Dr. Kondwani Nankhumwa on Wednesday paid a surprise visit to activist Lyton Mangochi who was arrested on Tuesday by Malawi Defence Force soldiers at his home in Karonga district.

Mangochi, earlier this month criticized the Chakwera led government in a recorded video clip which went viral on social media, for allegedly using MDF soldiers to ill-treat people from Karonga.

In the clip, Mangochi alleged that people from the district were being beaten mercilessly by the soldiers at Chilumba barracks without committing any ‘offense’.

This led to his arrest in the wee hours of Tuesday, before being released on bail on Wednesday.

In his brief remarks, Nankhumwa, who is also DPP Vice President for the South, pledged total support to Mangochi until the truth prevails in the matter.

Mangochi thanked the youthful politician for the gesture, saying he will not be cowed by the arrest.

Nankhumwa was accompanied by some DPP MPs and Northern Region party officials.
