Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has given government a 7 day ultimatum to engage concerned stakeholders and address the issue of import duty on vehicles.
In a statement, HRDC has described the recently released taxes on vehicles as not fair, unreasonable and punitive.
“The introduction of additional unrealistic taxes on vehicle importation exacerbates the financial strain on the populace, leading to further economic hardships. Under the new calculation regime, the taxes imposed far exceed the cost of the car itself,” reads the statement in part.
HRDC has threatened that it will tell Malawians the next course of action if government does not review the taxes in 7 days.
