A 39-year-old rape convict sent the Lilongwe Magistrate Court into stitches of laughter after he asked the court to set him free like “it did with former President Bakili Muluzi and former Minister Uladi Mussa.”

The man, Patisoni Kapito, who raped the 16-year old girl with the aid of his wife, said this in mitigation prior to being handed his 21-year prison sentence.

He went on to say that it is the duty of the court to “pardon its people.”

“Please set me free as you did with Muluzi and Uladi Mussa. I want to go back home and rebuild my toilet and my old mother’s house,” Kapito said, sending the court into laughter.

However, Principal Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe reminded Kapito that his and Muluzi’s and Mussa’s cases were different altogether.

Michongwe went on to convict and sentence Kapito to 21-years imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl, who also happened to be his neighbour.

Michongwe has also ordered the State, through Prosecutor Sub Inspector Florence Mlanje, to ensure that Kapito’s wife be arrested for aiding the rape convict.
