Police in Lilongwe are hunting for a group of people that allegedly killed Village Headman Mnduwa in Mitundu on Friday.

Village Headman Mnduwa real name Lackson Katema died in a battle between the Senior Chief Chitseka camp and the Traditional Authority Chingala side in Mitundu.

Chitseka and Chingala have long locked horns over chieftaincy disputes and matters came to a head on Friday July 14, when Chitseka wanted to elevate Group Village Headman Kumwambe to Senior Group Village Headman.

This, however did not go down well with the Chingala camp who argued it was ill-timed in light of their decades old rivalry.

Armed with pangas, axes and sticks, Village Headman Mnduwa and fellow chiefs and their sympathisers stormed Kumwambe Village to disrupt the preparation which resulted into a fierce fight ending into the hacking of Village Headman Mnduwa in the head.

According to police spokesperson Foster Benjamin, Mnduwa was pronounced dead on the arrival at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

Meanwhile, police officers are on the ground to quell the volatile situation. Arrests of those involved in the mayhem are expected soon.
