The Malawi Police Services has destroyed 1073 firearms as one way of eliminating threats guns pose to the wildlife and community.
The gun destruction exercise took place at National Police Headquarters in Area 30 in Lilongwe as Malawi marked the International Gun Destruction Day. The day is observed on the 9th of July across the world.
Deputy Inspector General of Malawi Police Service Happy Mkandawire says the police will continue to join forces with different partners to create a safe and secure Malawi for all citizens.
Mkandawire says most of the firearms destroyed were collected from pochers while some were abandoned in game reseves and national parks.
Last time Malawi conducted similar exercise was in 2017.
