An Angry mob around Mpamba village in Nkhata Bay district has brutally assaulted to death a man identified as James Kenani for allegedly catching him stealing fresh maize cobs in a maize field.
Nkhata Bay Police Station Public Relations Officer Sergeant Kondwani James has confirmed the death and said the the incident occurred in the afternoon hours of August 7, 2023 at Mpamba.
Kenani was allegedly spotted plucking green maize cobs by Mariam Masonga, a local farmer who was in her maize field doing other field activities.
She eventually called for help such that some villagers ganged up and managed to catch Kenani.
They manhandled him before he was brought to Nkhata Bay Police Station by members of community policing.
Upon observing the severity of his injuries, police took Kenani to Nkhata Bay District Hospital where he died upon arrival due to multiple cuts he sustained.
Following the incident, Police Officers rushed to the scene and through intelligence, arrested two suspects namely Fortune Kasambala 31, and Evance Ngozo 60, both from Timbiri Village, Traditional Authority Timbiri in the district.
Meanwhile, further investigations have been instituted to arrest the remaining suspects who will be taken to court after completion of investigations.
James Kenani hailed from Dambo Village, Traditional Authority Chiseka in Lilongwe.
