Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Tuesday failed to elect a Candidate for the Mwasa Ward by-elections due to a fracas which ensued during the primaries.

DPP eastern region governor Imran Mtenje said the party could not proceed with the primaries because there were some people who are not delegates but lined up to vote, which could have compromised the results of the primary elections.

Instead, the DPP regional committee has recommended two candidates’ names to the party’s hierarchy for consideration.

“What it means is that the party leadership will just select one candidate from the two names of leading candidates which we have presented to them. As a regional office we have made our recommendations to the our leaders and it is up to them to choose,” Mtenje said.

Mtenje named Kida Adam and Chikondi Kaira, who have been presented to the party’s leadership after the botched primaries.
