Police in Rumphi are keeping in custody a 30 year-old man for allegedly stealing a motorcycle at Mhuju area.
Rumphi Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant, Tupeliwe Kabwilo has identified the suspect who is also an ex-convict as Nicholas Munthali
Kabwilo has said that the incident occurred during night of between August 7 and 8 2023.
The owner of the motorcycle, Moses Kapira, told the police that he parked his motorcycle inside the fence of his compound.
The said motorcycle had an anti theft alarm which used to ring whenever someone touched it.
Then on the said night, Munthali who has just been pardoned from prison in July this year and three accomplices went to Kapira’s house and robbed the motorcycle.
Later, after some minutes the owner heard an alarm of his motorcycle and upon coming out from his house, he found that the motorcycle was no where to be seen.
Upon going outside his house fence he saw four people at a distance with a motorcycle.
Together with help of neighbors, they followed the suspects where they were going with the motorcycle.
The four suspects realized that they were being hunted and they escaped, leaving the motorcycle behind.
Luckily, Munthali was apprehended at his home and the matter was reported to Rumphi Police who after conducting investigations they managed to recover two laptop bags in his house with assorted metals, chisels, Pliers, Hammer, Face mask and bundle of keys which is believed he was using in breaking houses.
During interrogation, Munthali revealed that his three accomplices are operating from Mzuzu.
He will be taken before court of law to answer the charge of theft after completion of investigation.
Meanwhile, the police in district are appealing to community members who can have information which can lead to the arrest of three suspects at large.
Nicholas Munthali comes from Mutanila Village under Traditional Authority Mwahenga in Rumphi.
