The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has said it is yet to trace the whereabouts of former Budget Director Paul Mphwiyo.

Mphwiyo who is awaiting sentence in a case where he and together with some suspects are accused of laundering over 2.5 billion cashgate scandal which happened during the reign of former President Dr. Joyce Banda.

Speaking in an interview with the press National Police Spokesperson Peter Kayala said the law enforcers have intensified their investigation in search for Mphwiyo.

“We have suspicions that Mphwiyo might not be missing, but rather that he is on the run. While we are looking for him, and we are aware that he is answering criminal charges, there are chances that he might be on the run,” said Kalaya.

Kalaya could not state if they have collaborated with Interpol now that they suspect that the former budget director may be a fugitive.

Sources have it that Mphwiyo is in South Africa.

Mphwiyo was reported missing by his family on June 26 2023.
