Leader of opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa who is also Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President for the South has expressed shock over the death of 20 Malawians in the devastating fire accident that occurred in Johannesburg, South Africa, in the morning of Thursday, 31st August, 2023.
South Africa media reports that so far, 74 people have been confirmed dead including 12 children after a blaze in a five-storey building owned by the City of Johannesburg.
Malawi High Commissioner to South Africa, Stella Ndau has confirmed of the death of 20 Malawians in an interview with the press.
Writing on his official facebook page Nankhumwa said he is deeply saddened by the incident.
“The loss of any life is a tragedy, but it is particularly heartbreaking and painful when it happens suddenly and in such a horrific manner like it happened in Johannesburg on Thursday. This incident has brought immense grief and pain to our nation, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims.
“As Leader of Opposition in Parliament, I stand in solidarity with those affected by this tragedy. Please know that you are not alone in your grief. We share your sorrow and offer our heartfelt commiseration,” reads part of the statement.
He added: “To the survivors who have been injured or traumatized by this tragic event, I extend my sympathies and wish you a speedy recovery. As we mourn the loss of our fellow Malawians, let us also honour their memory by working towards preventing such accidents from happening again.
“My appeal to fellow Malawians is, let us come together as a nation to mourn the loss of our fellow Malawians and to support their families during this time of immense grief. May their souls rest in eternal peace, and may we find solace in knowing that they will forever be remembered as cherished members of our nation.”
