Years after Physical Education was removed in the country’s school curriculum, Education Ministry has embarked on the re-introduction of the subject in the country’s schools aiming at developing and promoting sporting skills from the early stages.

In March this year, the Ministry issued a circular, which was signed by the Secretary for Education, Chikondano Mussa, encouraging heads of schools and school managers at all levels to regard Physical Education (PE) as one of the core subjects, and now the Ministry through Equity with Quality and Learning at Secondary (EQUALS) has procured sports equipment for various sporting disciplines totaling to K200 million.

Currently the equipment which include football, netball, handball, volleyball, javelin, discus, and chess have been distributed to 13 education districts such as Neno, Mwanza, Phalombe, Mulanje, Zomba rural, Balaka, Salima, Kasungu, Mchinji, Lilongwe rural West, Karonga, and Chitipa in the just ending week.

The Ministry in its quest to make sure no one is left behind, has included equipment for learners with disabilities in various disciplines.

“The Ministry aligns sports development through implementing Human Capital Development enabler number 5 which among other key areas promotes skills development and skilled labour” Said Mussa.

On their part, Balaka Secondary School deputy headteacher, Gresham Muhalu, and Mulanje’s Chambe Secondary School headteacher, Clement Majawa expressed excitement, saying for long their schools have been lacking sports equipment, adding the donation will go a long way in improving sporting activities.

The reintroduction of the PE in schools will in a long run help the country to produce athletes who can ably represent Malawi at international competitions.
