Chairperson of unemployed teachers in Malawi, Wonderful Gama says they are ready for a dialogue with the Ministry of Education officials on their concerns among them, lack of employment.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency ( Mana), Gama said they have received an invitation letter from the ministry for them to discuss the way forward following a petition which they presented.

“As concerned teachers we are happy that finally we can discuss the problems that unemployed teachers are facing, since 2022 most of the teachers under IPTE 13 and 14 are not yet employed,” Gama lamented.

He further said as unemployed teachers, they hope that after this meeting things will change because they are almost five cohorts that are not employed.

On 15th September 2023 the group wrote a letter to government to demand that ministry of education should employ all IPTE 13 and 14 qualified teachers.

The group also alleged corrupt practices by education officials claiming some IPTE 15 teachers were recruited while teachers from IPTE 13 and 14 were not yet recruited.

In response, Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Dr Rachel Chimbwete Phiri has issued a statement indicating that there will be an interface meeting with all unemployed teachers of IPTE 13 and IPTE 14 on 21st September 2023.
