A 31-year-old man, Charles Chirwa, has been sentenced to six years in prison with hard labor by the Nkhatabay Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court for assaulting his aunt identified as Beatrice Phiri.
According to Kondwani James, spokesperson for Nkhatabay police, in June, amid rainfall, Chirwa opted to seek refuge in his aunt’s house but was denied entry.
Out of anger, Chirwa assaulted her until she lost consciousness.
After being arrested Chirwa denied to have assaulted his aunt but was convicted based on witness testimonies and medical evidence.
Chirwa’s actions were equated to attempted murder a development that led the court dismissing his mitigating factors therefore being sentenced to 6 year imprisonment with hard labor by Senior Resident Magistrate Mateo Chitha.
