A police officer identified as Chisomo Redger has been beaten severely at Mpondabwino Market in Zomba after stealing MK76, 000.00 from an Airtel Money Agent.
Police officers from Zomba have confirmed of the development in a statement made available to this publication, saying the incident happened on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
The fact of the matter is that the man in uniform is No. B7848 Xonst. Chisomo Redger, who was assigned to work at ward 11 at Zomba Central hospital.
The officer received a message on his phone from unknown person that he has received cash amounting to K 200.000.00.
The message was followed by instructions that he should share the money with other two people and he was given the numbers of the people to share with.
“Seeing this message the officer left his duty post to Mpondabwino market to do the transactions. He told the Airtel money agent(reporter) to do the transactions he was advised to do. The agent send K 76, 000.00 to the number he was given by the suspect and later requested for the cash but the officer failed to produce the cash.
“Then the agent checked balance from the suspects number and found that there was no cashin his phone. The officer REALISED that he was scammed and had nothing to say to the agent, he opted to run away from the scene. The reporter shouted for help and the officer was immediately apprehended by the public who locked him up in one of the shops at the market and called the Police for Identification,” reads part of the statement.
The victim has been identified as Raymond Majawa.
Meanwhile, the Police officer is still in custody pending investigations.
