President Lazarus Chakwera has officially inaugurated the Mangochi-Nkhudzi Bay Water Project in Mangochi.
The multi- billion Kwacha project taps water from Lake Malawi to connect 192,000 water points under the Southern Region Water Board (SRWB).
According to the Southern Region Water Board, implementers of the project, the water supply scheme has a main water tank with a holding capacity of 4000 cubic meters at the top of Nkhudzi Bay Hill including staff houses.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony Chakwera expressed his gratitude saying the Nkhudzi Bay water project goes beyond having clean water but also improving people’s life economically.
“Access to clean water has far leaching effects on the economic life of any community, which is why my administration has been aggressive in coding and securing investments in water sector of our country”
Chakwera also added that projects like Nkhudzi Bay water scheme needs collaboration from different stake holders to be successful.
” Without working together, the challenges that arise in course of any project can be real and delay progress,” said Chakwera.
Traditional Chief Nankumba thanked the government of Malawi for implementing this project to his community saying it will improve peoples lives in accessing clean water.
Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia also expound her appreciation saying for a long-time people were having difficulties in accessing clean water and this project will accelerate the access of having clean water.
The water supply project has been jointly funded by Kuwait Fund International and the Malawi Government costing about $15. 7 million (approximately K18 billion) and 92 thousand households are expected to benefit from the project.
