In preparation for the World Teachers Day celebrations taking place tomorrow in Mzuzu, government through the Minister of education has held a presser to prepare this year’s celebration.

Every year, 5th October is designated as World Teachers’ Day for all countries to focus on appreciating and celebrating the educators of the world as well as providing an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching.

Malawi joins the world in commemorating the day on yearly basis.

According to minister of education Hon.Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, M.P, in the past two years, Malawi has joined the rest of the world by commemorating the day on days that were varied from the official date of5th October. In 2021, the event was celebrated on 30th October in Lilongwe whereas in 2022, the event was held on 25th October in Blantyre.

This year, the main event will be held on 18th October 2023 at Grand Palace Hotel in Mzuzu City.

The event will start with a road march led by the Malawi Police Brass Band from Mzuzu High Court Roundabout to Grand Palace Hotel where four best teachers from each of the 34 education districts will be awarded.

“Everyone knows a teacher and each one of us has a teacher that stands out in his or her life. As part of a national acknowledgement and recognition for teachers, we are all called to celebrate outstanding teachers in our lives by stepping forward to thank teachers nearest to us with any token of appreciation such as chickens, goats, cows, food, money
and many others”, Said Wirima.

The World Teachers’ Day was collaboratively established in 1994 by UNESCO, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and other partners inorder to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
