President Dr Lazarus Chakwera today hosted the Malawi National Women’s Football Team at Kamuzu Palace for a luncheon.
Chakwera hosted the Scorchers following the team’s triumph in the just ended 2023 Hollywoodbets COSAFA Women’s Championship, after defeating Zambia 2-1 in the finals.
Speaking at the luncheon, President Lazarus Chakwera praised the Malawi National Women’s Football team for their unity and fighting spirit that the showed at the tournament.
“I celebrate your unity because in every match you played as a unit, that cannot be divided by the opposition or daunted by adversity. I celebrate your tenacity because in every match you played as your life depends on it,” said Chakwera.
The Malawi leader also donated K1.5m plus a piece of land to each and every player and official who was part of the Scorchers winning team at the Cosafa Women’s Championship in South Africa.
Scorchers Captain Temwa Chawinga hailed her fellow players for their fighting spirit which they showcased at the tournament.
Chawinga also appealed to President Lazarus Chakwera to consider supporting the players by giving them jobs in different statutory co-operations saying women’s football players face a lot of challenges in the country.
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu applauded Prophet Shepherd Bushiri for supporting the scorchers with K29 million for their trip to South Africa.
Nyamilandu also added that the Scorchers success was inspired by President Chakwera who has always been there for the team.
The Malawi National women’s football Team have become the only Malawian national team to win a trophy after 35 years.
