The Kenya Meteorology Department had warned of heavy rains from October but President William Ruto says the alert has scaled down for short rains.
There had been widespread concerns about EI Nino rains which were imminent following the alert, leading to fears of potential damage to properties. The weatherman clarified that the rains will be significant, nut not EI Nino.
EI Nino is a climate pattern that occurs every two to seven years, while the Indians ocean Dipole is a climate pattern linked to sea surfaced temperature in the ocean.
The Kenya Meteorology Department had previously cautioned Kenyans to remain vigilant regarding the EI Nino phenomenon, which occurs every 3 to 5 years.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations said it’s Somalia Water and Land Information Management (SWALIM) Unit is ramping up mitigation measures, including mapping out flood prone areas ahead of the expected EI Nino rains.
