The senior chief Mkumpha of Likoma Island has asked government to consider buying an additional passenger ship on Lake Malawi as this will help to prevent life risk among those sailing across the lake using un-sea worthy water vessels.

The Chief said this during the commemoration of the 2023 National Community Health Day presided over by President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.

Chief Mkumpha also asked president Chakwera to introducing two or more vessels on Lake Malawi, arguing that Ilala is old and tired.

He said Ilala is usually overloaded because it is the only reliable vessel.

The traditional leader also decried short supply of maize in Admarc depots in the district, pleading with the government, that government that much as hunger is a national concern, the district should be considered as they solely depend on purchases.

“Sometimes my people go to Admarc deports and find very little or nothing and go back home crying. We have nowhere to find maize here, so please ensure that we have maize all the time,” He says.
