Vice President Saulos Chilima has contributed K1 million towards the Veterans and Ex-service League of Malaŵi (Velom), to help the organisation take care of war veterans.

He made the contribution on Tuesday when Velom paid him a visit ahead of the Poppy week.

Chilima said he was happy with what Velom is doing in taking care of the ex-service men.

Said Chilima: “We commend you for the job you are doing in ensuring that our war veterans’ welfare is well taken care of.”

Chairperson for Velom, General Henry Odilo (Retired) said there are nine remaining war veterans who are housed in Zomba.

Said Odilo, “What we are getting from the private sector is giving us quite a push but we need more support to aid us in helping these war veterans.”

This was the second event ahead of the Poppy Week. The first took place last Friday where President Lazarus Chakwera got the first poppy flower.

Chakwera then made a contribution of K2 million towards the cause.
